Experience
Cristián leads the Intellectual Property area. He became a partner in Puga Ortiz in 2003 after having been a partner in Simonetti y Cía. (1997 – 2003), an associate at Morales, Noguera, Valdivieso & Besa (1995-1997) and at Bascuñan, Amunátegui y Cía. (1988-1995). From 1993 to 1994, he was part-time attorney for Gasco S.A., a gas company in Santiago.
Awards and Honors
He has been ranked as one of the best Chilean intellectual property lawyers by Chambers and Partners, Leaders League and Best Lawyers.
Education
He did grade school at Saint George’s College and high school at The Grange School in Santiago. He earned a Law Degree from 1981 to 1985 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and was admitted to the Bar in 1988.
1990 to 1991, he completed a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at Queen Mary University of London, England, with an emphasis on Comparative Law and Intellectual Property. In 1998, he became a fellow in the industrial property program of the Institute of Invention and Innovation, in Tokyo, Japan.
Academia
He was a professor of Commercial Law at the Law School of Finis Terrae University in Santiago, Chile (1993-2000) and an associate professor of Intellectual Property at the University of Chile Law School (2003-2004).
Activities and Memberships
He is an arbitrator for NIC Chile, resolving disputes regarding the “.cl” Internet Domain Name Registration System; and he is a member of the Panel of Mediators and Arbitrators of the National Council of Culture and the Arts for Intellectual Property Dispute Resolution. He is a member of the Chilean Bar Association, of the Chilean Intellectual Property Association (ACHIPI), of the Inter-American Association of Industrial Property (ASIPI), of the International Association for Intellectual Property Protection (AIPPI), of the International Trademark Association (INTA) and of the Association for Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS). He is also a member of the Tribunal of Honor of the Chilean Tennis Federation.
From 2005 to 2017, he was a director of the Chilean Intellectual Property Association, where he worked on the Industrial Property Law Reform, among other projects
